5 Steps to Follow a Crochet Pattern

I run into people that "don't work from patterns" all the time. In fact, I used to be one of them. Then I realized I was missing out on the ideas that OTHER PEOPLE were putting out there. After thinking long and hard about it, I realized I was almost kind of afraid to fail at reading someone else's pattern. Granted it's all yarn, and I could rip it all out at anytime... not like my arm would spontaneously fall off after a wrong stitch or missed row. (How cool would that be on a monster doll though... *writing it down for later*)

Taking the step from learning the basic stitches of crochet to reading a pattern just takes a few simple steps. Before you know it, you'll be searching out crochet patterns to find that perfect project.

5 steps to following a crochet pattern

1. Make sure you have the correct amount of yarn and all the supplies called for in the pattern. There's nothing worse than having to stop your work because you have to run out to get a forgotten supply.

2. Check to see what your gauge is. Most crochet patterns call for a certain number of stitches to an inch or 4 inches. Crochet a small square (swatch) and measure your stitches. Adjust your hook or yarn accordingly if needed.

3. Read the notes, abbreviations and special stitches. Most patterns are abbreviated so make sure you are familiar with the ones used. These can vary from pattern to pattern. Some patterns also have special stitches and notes included to help you understand the pattern better. Read them all.

4. Start at the beginning and follow the pattern through to the end. Utilize any extra pictures that are included. Keep track of what row you are working on. Most short patterns can be finished in a matter of hours to a couple of days. Longer patterns like afghans and sweaters may take additional time.

5. Show off your lovely crochet creation, and start looking for the next pattern for your next project!

You can find free patterns by searching online.

Keep track of where you are in your pattern if you have to put your work down.

If you make a mistake, rip it out and fix it as soon as you notice.
