The Most Uninspiring Time of the Year

This is not your typical holiday post. It is actually the time of year when I feel the most bored with my work and uninspired. Maybe it's too many cat butt orders (which I may never make again... which I'm lying about, but I need a better plan for next year.) Maybe I'm just tired, or maybe our constant need for material possessions is killing me (which is kind of ironic, seeing that I sell things that aren't useful). It has been a long year.

In a little under a week, I will be taking my crochet hook and making things that have nothing to do with Knot By Gran'ma. Well... I probably will and I'll probably still have cat butts that need to be made, but it will be less. My shipping for the holidays ends soon, so the demand for holiday butts in the shape of cats or pugs will end soon also. I think that's the part I'm looking forward to the most this year.

This all being said, I am very grateful for all of the sales this year. I think this was one of my better holiday seasons... ever. I think (I think too much) it's time to step back into myself and see what amazing monsters or creations are lurking in the wings (that's theater talk for in the background area). The ones that have been quietly waiting for some spare time, so they can be put down into thoughts and eventually realities. Then I will bake some cookies, because we didn't do any last year. That's just not right, and it should fix those holiday blahs at least for a little while.

What do you do to get out of a holiday funk? Do you use this time to regroup or just chug right through in a blaze of glory? What are your favorite holiday cookies to make/eat?

  1. I pretty much stay in a funk from the moment the Christmas decorations come up in the stores -- which this year was before Thanksgiving. I hate, hate, hate what has been done to this holiday. Even if you aren't religious or even spiritual, it shouldn't be about buying and gimmegimmegimme so much! At least there are angel trees, Toys for Tots, and the Salvation Army reminding us who we should be thinking of and helping. Yes, I'm a grouch :-)

My mom made awesome cookies. Cream Cheese cookies shaped like wreaths, peanut butter cookies with hershey kisses, Russian teacakes ... I made some one year and was astonished at how much work it was!

  4. It's funny, I wrote this post and then was completely inspired to do something about all of this. Now I have a plan and new direction... and it doesn't leave out the cat butts. :)

I forgot to mention my favorite cookies are these mint gingerbread things that I kind of made up. Maybe I should share the recipe. :)

  5. I'm glad you got some inspiration! I tend to get extra inspiration this time of year mostly because I'm looking forward to the new year and planing out all the new things I'm going to start doing in it. I try and see the new year as a clean slate where I evaluate what worked last year, what didn't, and what new things I'll be working on. Also I love coming up with new creations to give people as presents that eventually develop into new items. Oh and the large number of craft fairs help by not only because I get to see all the great things other people are making but by giving me quality thinking and plotting time!
