Find Your Fight and Do It

I was feeling a little down and unmotivated yesterday. I was looking at the creativity that was coming out of people and wondering why I wasn't fully helping support our family out financially. Sitting at the computer, "working" for hours, and I wasn't getting anything done. I started a blog draft, opened 8,000 tabs and proceeded to distract myself from doing what I was supposed to be finishing. Apparently I don't have that type A personality which lets me just sit and work... hook or online.

I didn't even pick up a crochet hook until after Dr. Destructo was in preschool and after I read this post from Dave on Fresh Rag: You Are Powerful Beyond Measure. Then I read the this Etsy Quit Your Day Job about a lady who sells crochet patterns... AS HER JOB!!!. Cue the phone and  Hubs regarding longer hours his job and me getting angry that we depend on his paycheck so friggin' bad. So yeah. That set my butt in motion.

I hear you, Universe. I'm on it. Basically, my power to do whatever I need is already inside of me. I just need to get myself together and do it. DO IT. DO IT. Putting in my talent, creativity, and hard work (not messing around on the computer.... that isn't the same), should trigger what needs to happen will. I'm fighting (in the nicest way possible) to carve out the niche of what I want to do. I sat down, and mapped out a plan. I made a realistic list of things that need to be completed in the span of this month, and I will take it from there. It's time to work my tush off and get the work done. Yarn flew through my fingers and now I have 3 mostly finished mini pocket monsters. I found my fight, and I'm letting go of the doubt.

Now if I can just find a response to "Oh they look just like those ugly monster dolls" when people talk to me about my monsters... Anyway, it's Friday, so check out Wisdom Begins in Wonder if you need more of a blog reading fix.

  1. I, for one, am rather fond of your monster dolls! :)

So weird - I was just talking about Etsy's Quit Your Day Job with a friend last night - weird synchronicity!

  3. Take the Etsy post with a grain of salt. If you look at her pattern sites, there are 18 pages of "patterns", but if you actually counted the different patterns it would condense down to 5 pages? There are multiple listings for the same patterns. One is even shown 4 times on the same page. And, the blog post was written by Etsy, so of course they are selling it in the best light. As to her product, it is pattern printing, not actual products. Her lead time is nil, the patterns are downloaded through Etsy's new device. She carries no inventory, makes no product, has no deadline. All that glitters is not gold, nor do we really know how much of a vacation her life is, or if her shop really supports here lifestyle.

  4. I've been struggling with the same kind of issues. Different business (indue publishing) same feelings of not pulling in enough income. Seeing your post has made me feel better, ready to keep going.

  5. I do know how you feel, as sometimes I feel that everyone is selling huge amounts. (I think there might be quite a bit of blagging going on.) Hope you know what that means. I am lucky, as although trying to build up my craft business, I also love my part-time paid job. However frustrating, I know I would not feel right if I wasn't doing something creative.

    Hope this makes sense.

  6. I admire your courage at having a go and follow your heart in doing what you love. All real successes come from humble beginnings and you are already on your way! The pocket monsters are so very cute :)

  7. I keep telling myself slow and steady... and just keep seeing that finish line.

  8. I found it odd that I caught that particular one. I never read any of those articles, because they just don't seem doable in my particular situation (2 kids), and I'm home anyway. Glad you dig my monsters too. Thanks!

  9. I love your creations! They are totally different from the other monsters. Yours have so much personality.

  10. Even some of the well known knitting designers don't live on independent pattern sales or book sales. They teach, sell yarn, sell kits, or design for magazines and publishers. When it comes to "make a living" it's all about how we define it.
